It’s that time of year again. Spring sports are ready to begin and as they prepare to educate and shape young minds the one thought every youth sports coach is contemplating is this…”How can I draft the best team and what leverage can I use to do it?

Kind of pathetic but at the same time kind of funny to witness. Pretty soon, grown men who rarely talk to one another outside of the sports season will pretend to be best friends simply because they want to make sure they coach together and have their kids on the same team. It’s the time of year when Dad’s will gladly volunteer to be the lunchtime “recess Mom” not so much because mom needs a rest but because Dad wants to scout the younger kids who are entering the draft for the first time. Baseball coaches are on the phone with basketball and football coaches to ask about the kids whose names don’t ring a bell. Lacrosse coaches are on the phone with baseball and softball coaches to find out about the kids who just left baseball and softball to try lacrosse for the first time. Convincing friends with talented kids to request you as a coach because “our kids get along so well.” Telling neighbors to request being placed with your kid for “carpooling purposes” knowing damn well that all the kids are basically playing around the same time and hang out in the same park all weekend no matter what.

Anything to get an edge over the competition.

If you’re laughing a little it’s because you know these things sound ridiculous but you also know that they’re true.

Gimme your draft horror stories but also let me know your ideas on how we can change things.

We’ll be doing this on this week’s show so be sure to call in if you h ave something good.

    Coach Tony
